The United Nations says at least two hundred and fifty thousand people have fled fighting in a Sudanese city of Wad Madani once seen as a safe haven for those escaping the civil war.

Reports say the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, RSF, have advanced into the city, in Al Jazira state.

For months, the city has housed large numbers seeking safety from fighting in the capital, Khartoum.

Residents of the city said the RSF – who are fighting the army – had attacked a hospital and had taken over a military base.
