President Bola Tinubu has announced the set up of a results and delivery unit, warning that ministers, presidential aides and government functionaries who fail to perform will be sacked.

The President gave the warning while declaring open the 2023 Cabinet Retreat for Ministers, Presidential Aides, Permanent Secretaries, and top government functionaries with a focus on delivering on the renewed hope agenda.

The Results and Delivery Unit according to the President, is to be headed by his Special Adviser on Policy Coordination, Hadiza Bala Usman.

President Tinubu charged cabinet members to be intellectually inquisitive, urging them to focus on the progress of the nation.

‘We are open for business.
That is why we established the Result Delivery Unit. At the end of this retreat, you’re going to sign a bond of understanding between you, the ministers, the permanent secretaries, and myself.

‘If you are performing, nothing to fear; if you miss the objective, we’ll review; if there is no performance, you leave us. No one is an island, and the buck stops on my desk.

I assure you, you have a free hand. You must be intellectually inquisitive to ask how, why, when, and why it must be immediate. You have the responsibility to serve the people.

“I’ve taken a young lady very dynamic, Hadiza Balla Usman, to head that delivery unit. If you have any complaints about her, see me. If you’re ready to work with her, stay there. Delivery, yes! we must achieve it for the sake of millions of people,” President Tinubu said.

He reiterated that healthcare and education are key to eradicating poverty, stressing that Nigeria as a great country is one family and his administration is determined to renew the hope of the hopeless.

In his opening remarks, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume charged the participants of the retreat to speak the truth, be loyal to the President, accountable and adhere to best practices to achieve the renewed hope agenda of national unity and economic growth.

Hinting that the retreat will explain guidelines that appointees are supposed to follow, Akume said that the retreat would afford participants the opportunity to share in the President’s vision, his dream and to finetune strategies for a prosperous Nigeria.

“Let me quickly reiterate that as members of the Federal Executive Council, Federal Republic of Nigeria, we are expected to uphold high level of integrity, patriotism, dedication and diligence to the Service of our fatherland.
“We are the first line advisers to the President and we are expected to speak the truth and to support the President with untainted selflessness,” he noted.

British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, who lauded the leadership skills and international engagements of President Tinubu, expressed the United Kingdom’s readiness to continue to support the Nigerian government in the spirit of mutual respect to move the nation forward.

Also, World Bank Country Director, Shubham Chaudhuri pledged the global institution’s support to President Tinubu’s administration, assuring that the Bank will support the government’s programs to lift many Nigerians out of poverty and provide renewed hope.

High point of the retreat will be the signing of a bond of understanding on performance to be monitored by the results and delivery unit.
