INEC assures Nigerians of credible election in Osun State

Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the people’s votes count in Saturday’s Osun State Governorship election

Yakubu who gave the assurance at a stakeholders meeting ahead of Saturday, in Osun State, said that the commission is not ready to take any action that would discredit the electioneering process either to the advantage or disadvantage of any political party or candidate.

He stressed that the commission’s focus is solely directed towards abiding by the laws guiding the nation’s electoral processes and procedures.

The Chief Electoral Umpire harped on the need for INEC, political parties, and civil society organizations to enhance engagement and participation in preparation for the 2023 General Election in the country.

The INEC Chairman however appealed to Osun residents to come out en-mass to vote, noting that the choice of who becomes the next Governor of the state hinges on them.

Yakubu also assured that adequate arrangements have been put in place to guarantee the security and safety of voters during and after the poll.

On his part, the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, noted that flashpoints have been identified, while warning electoral violators to desist from causing mayhem or be ready to face the wrought of the law.

Also speaking at the event, the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi lauded INEC for its commitment and assurance to delivering credible election in the state,

Earlier, the Supervising National Commissioner, Prof. Kunle Ajayi, and the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Osun State Abdulganiy Raji said they are drawing lessons from past elections to improve upon processes and procedures, under the 2022 Electoral Act.

Acknowledging that INEC cannot achieve the needed victory alone, they unanimously called on all participating political parties to collaborate with the commission to enhance a peaceful exercise
