ECOWAS Parliament Steps-down Draft on Establishment of Special Tribunal for The Gambia

The Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has opposed the draft decision on the establishment of a special Tribunal for the Gambia.

It also stepped-down the adoption of the Statute of the Special Tribunal for the Gambia sent by the ECOWAS Commission.

The resolution was made at the plenary sitting of 2024 First Ordinary Session of the Sixth Legislature of the Parliament presided over by the Speaker, Mamounatu Ibrahima in Abuja.

The Joint Committee on Legal Affairs. and Human Rights, Political Affirms, Peace, Security and Aprm, Social Affirms, Gender, and Women Empowerment in its recommendation advised the Parliament to reject the request

Parliamentarians took turns to express their opinions concerning the draft which was presented by Honourable Marciano India on behalf of the committee.

Debating the Matter, the Parliamentarians gave their suggested that the decision be dropped by the parliament

Some Gambia delegation to the parliament however supported the decision for ECOWAS to establish the court, on the ground that it would be of great benefit to the country.

The draft was afterwards stepped down by the Parliamentarians.
